High Places

High Places in the Bible

“High places,” in the Bible, were places of worship on elevated pieces of ground or raised altars in low land such as a valley. High places were originally dedicated to idol worship (Numbers 33:52; Leviticus 26:30). These shrines often included an altar and a sacred object such as a stone pillar or wooden pole in various shapes, identifying with the object of worship.

King Solomon loved YHWH, and did MOST things right, but when he came to power, he left the high places intact. He justified it by using them to worship YHWH. That, however, wasn’t good enough…

1 Kings 3:3 And Solomon loved YHWH, walking in the statutes of David his father: only he sacrificed and burnt incense in high places.

He didn’t change his religions or start worshiping a different god: he was just worshiping YHWH the way other peoples worship their gods.
The Legacy Continued

Other kings followed in his footsteps. After all, nobody likes to break with tradition! And besides, man’s wisdom tells us Elohim judges what’s in our hearts and not the ‘semantics’ of our actions…

When Jeroboam came to power, he too left the high places intact.

1 Kings 12:31 And he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi.

When Asa came to power, he too left the high places intact.

1 Kings 15:14 But the high places were not removed: nevertheless Asa’s heart was perfect with YHWH all his days.

When Jehoshaphat came to power, he too left the high places intact.

1 Kings 22:43 And he walked in all the ways of Asa his father; he turned not aside from it, doing that which was right in the eyes of YHWH: nevertheless the high places were not taken away; for the people offered and burnt incense yet in the high places.

When Joash came to power, he too left the high places intact.

2 Kings 12:3 But the high places were not taken away: the people still sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places.

When Amaziah came to power, he too left the high places intact.

2 Kings 14:4 Howbeit the high places were not taken away: as yet the people did sacrifice and burnt incense on the high places.

When Azariah came to power, he too left the high places intact.

2 Kings 15:4 Save that the high places were not removed: the people sacrificed and burnt incense still on the high places.

When Jotham came to power, he too left the high places intact.

2 Kings 15:35 Howbeit the high places were not removed: the people sacrificed and burned incense still in the high places. He built the higher gate of the house of YHWH.

When Ahaz came to power, he too left the high places intact.

2 Kings 16:4 And he sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree.
The Legacy Eventually Ended

Finally, when Hezekiah came to power, he DESTROYED the high places.

2 Kings 18:4-5 He removed the high places, and brake the images, and cut down the groves, and brake in pieces the brasen serpent that Moses had made: for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it: and he called it Nehushtan. He trusted in YHWH Elohim of Israel; so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor any that were before him.
High Places Today

Today, Christianity teaches us that:

– we can be baptized incorrectly and it doesn’t matter!

– we can disregard the Sabbath and it doesn’t matter!

– we can bring pagan symbols into our homes and it doesn’t matter!

– we can ignore YHWH’s commandments at will and it doesn’t matter!

– we can now make images of Messiah, Mary or whatever else and it doesn’t matter!

– we can celebrate clearly pagan holidays (Christmas and Easter) and it doesn’t matter!

– we can completely ignore everything the Bible says and it just doesn’t matter!

For some reason, ‘high places’ were completely unacceptable in the Bible, but are the status quo in modern times. My how our Elohim must have changed!!!!!!

Or maybe it’s time for us to step up like Hezekiah did. If you’re serious about serving YHWH faithfully, read the Word and DO THE RIGHT THING! Tear down the high places Christianity and YOU and I have let come into our lives by means of tradition and false teaching.

Do you serve YHWH? Or do you serve Christianity? Or a church? Or a man? Or a tradition?
